instructors
Training: KBK instructors are always working to improve themselves by attending seminars, studying with world recognized masters, and researching the best ways to instruct our students.
Certified: Our instructors are certified by the Traditional Tang Soo Do International, Sosei Aikido Kyokai, Hatmaker’s Combat Sports, and the AIKIA World International Network; four of the most prestigious martial arts organizations in the world.
CHRIS WHEARY
Chris is a certified Refuse to Be a Victim Instructor, certified handgun instructor, and a student of Brazilian Jujitsu and submission wrestling.
He is also training in preparation to instruct additional firearm and fitness classes.
JASON MILLER
Jason is a Traditional Tang Soo Do International certified instructor.
Jason began at the age of six, earning an advanced degree in Shotokan Karate. He participated in many tournaments and demonstrations where he placed many times and captured a Mississippi State Championship in 1986. In 2001, Jason began his training in Tang Soo Do under the tutelage of Master Norman Hatch. He won two national titles in 2002 and earned his black belt in Tang Soo Do in 2003. In addition to his martial arts skills, Jason is a graduate of Florida State University with a Masters degree in Sports Psychology.
In 2004, Jason moved to Roanoke, Virginia to be with his wife. During this same year, Jason began teaching karate in a recreational facility. In 2005, Jason and his “family” (John Miller and Chris Wheary) established the Kyuusai Martial Arts Institute, which eventually came under the umbrella of the Kyuusai Budo Kai.
Jason continues to compete successfully in national and local competitions including winning Gold Medals in Breaking and Weapons and a Silver Medal in Korean Forms at the 2006 Virginia Commonwealth Games. Several of his students also earned medals at this event.
While Jason loves to compete, his training and teaching philosophy is to be prepared for reality. His approach to teaching is not for sport but the betterment of the entire person and solid, proven self-defense.
JOHN MILLER
As a member instructor of Sosei Aikido Kyokai, Miller Sensei works to provide a quality program and further the dream of making Aikido available for everyone.
John is a certified instructor through AIKIA’s World International Network. He is also an Associate Coach in the Hatmaker Combat Sports Training program and a Bronze Certified Coach through USA Wrestling.
John is currently enrolled in the Biblical Studies program from the Liberty Home Bible Institute and holds a degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Radford University. He combines both of these disciplines into his martial arts with the goal of improving the spiritual fruit and athletic performance of the practitioner.
His personal philosophy is “self-expression through the martial arts.” In order to be effective the tactics and techniques need to be simple, match the persons personality and attributes, and become natural extensions of the person by connecting the body, mind, and spirit.
LAINEY MILLER
Lainey is a certified Level 1 instructor for Martial Fusion, a combination of Hip Hop and Kung Fu.
She makes monthly trips to the DC area to train with Willie “The Bam” Johnson.
